With dog-friendly beaches available to you all around Lake Tahoe, there is bound to be one close by to your vacation rental. All of the beaches boast scenic lake views and plenty of sandy shorelines for your furry friend to roam, sniff and get some exercise. If you are making a picnic out of it, it’s important to note that wood or charcoal fires or grills are not permitted on Tahoe beaches. However, Portable gas grills are allowed with a valid CA Campfire Permi t on some beaches.

Kiva Beach

Located on the south shore of Lake Tahoe, Kiva Beach is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. This beach has plenty of space for your pup to run around and play, and there are even designated areas for dogs to swim. Just be sure to keep your pup on a leash and clean up after them. There are no wood or charcoal fires or grills permitted on this beach so leave the BBQ equipment at home.

Nevada Beach

Nevada Beach is located on the east shore of Lake Tahoe and is another great option for dog owners. Dogs are allowed on the beach as long as they are on a leash, and there are even dog waste stations throughout the area for easy clean-up. With its expansive sandy beach and crystal-clear waters, Nevada Beach is a great place to spend a day with your furry friend.

Coon Street Dog Beach

Coon Street Dog Beach is located on the east end of Kings Beach off Coon Street. This is a great little spot for sunbathers and their dogs. It features restrooms, picnic areas with grills and a boat launch. Dogs are allowed only on the rocky “dog beach” area south of the boat launch – check signage to make sure you’re legal.

Chimney Beach

If you’re looking for a more secluded spot to enjoy with your pup, Chimney Beach might be just what you’re looking for. Located on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, this beach is accessible only by a short hike, which means it’s less crowded than some of the other beaches in the area. Dogs are allowed on the beach as long as they are on a leash.

Fun Fact: Chimney beach is named after the stone chimney that still remains on the lakeshore, a remnant of the caretaker’s cabin that once stood there.

North Lake Tahoe Beach

North Lake Tahoe Beach is located in Kings Beach on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. This beach is a popular spot for families and is also dog-friendly. The nearest shoreline area that allows dogs is at the end of Raccoon Street in Kings Beach. Dogs are allowed on the beach as long as they are on a leash and there are waste stations available throughout the area. With plenty of sand and shallow waters, this is a great spot for your pup to play.

Secret Cove

Located on the east shore of Lake Tahoe, Secret Cove is a beautiful, secluded spot that is popular with locals. Dogs are allowed on the beach as long as they are on a leash, and there are plenty of hiking trails nearby for you and your furry friend to explore. With its crystal-clear waters and rocky shoreline, Secret Cove is a great spot to relax and enjoy the scenery. Note that there are no dog waste bags provided at this beach so be sure to pack extra.

Doggy Beach Bag Essentials

  • Leash & Harness : Even if the beach is dog-friendly, it’s important to have a leash on hand in case you need to control your dog or keep them away from other beach-goers, or it’s required by park law. A harness is a great choice to keep your dog comfortable and prevent hurting their neck.
  • Water and Treats : It’s essential to keep your dog hydrated, especially when they’re playing in the sun and saltwater. Bring a portable water bottle and a collapsible water bowl to make it easier to give your dog water. Have treats on hand for rewarding dogs for good behavior and learning tricks.
  • Sunscreen : Dogs can get sunburned too, so if your dog has a thin coat or light skin, consider applying pet-safe sunscreen to protect them from the sun’s harmful rays.
  • Towels : Dogs love to get wet and sandy, so bring plenty of towels to dry them off and clean them up before heading home. Some extra towels in the car to protect your seats are always helpful.
  • Toys : Your dog will likely want to play at the beach, so bring some toys to keep them entertained. A frisbee, ball, or water-safe toys are great options.
  • Poop Bags : Be a responsible pet owner and pick up after your dog. Bring plenty of poop bags to clean up after your dog and dispose of them properly. Many Tahoe beaches enforce fines for not picking up after your pet so be prepared.
  • A First-aid Kit : Accidents can happen anywhere, so it’s always a good idea to have a first-aid kit on hand for your dog. Include items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers for removing ticks.
  • A Life Jacket : If your dog is not a strong swimmer or you plan to take them out on a boat or kayak, consider bringing a life jacket to keep them safe in the water.
